In today’s busy life, stomach related problems have become common. Heaviness in the stomach, gas formation or always feeling bloated… most of us are troubled by this at one time or the other. Usually we blame it on spicy food, hormonal changes or eating in a hurry.
But what if we say that the reason is not your food, but your breathing pattern or the style of sitting in the toilet?
Yes, gastroenterologist Dr. Kumkum Patel recently talked about some very common, but overlooked habits, which can be the root of all the disturbances happening in our stomach.
1. You are breathing wrong!
This may sound strange, but it is true. According to Dr. Patel, most of us take small breaths just by expanding our chest (Chest Breathing). Due to this, the pressure inside the stomach increases and the problem of gas and bloating starts.
- What is the correct way of breathing?
Look at small children, they always breathe through their stomachs! The stomach should expand like a balloon while inhaling and should go in while exhaling. This “Diaphragmatic Breathing” They say. This method reduces the pressure inside the stomach, improves digestion and reduces the chances of gas formation.
2. The way you sit on the toilet is wrong
Many times, the reason for flatulence is not our wrong eating habits, but sitting in the toilet in the wrong way. When we sit straight (at a 90 degree angle) on the English toilet, a kind of twist or pressure is created on our intestines, due to which the stomach is not able to be completely cleared. Residual gas and stool cause heaviness and bloating in the stomach.
- What is the correct way?
Experts recommend placing a small stool under your feet when sitting on the toilet. Due to this, your body posture naturally becomes like ‘squat’, which reduces the pressure on the stomach and cleans the stomach easily in one go.
3. You don’t give your stomach any rest! (eat something every hour)
If you also have a habit of eating something again and again, like a biscuit with tea, and then a handful of namkeen or chips after some time, then you never allow your digestive system to rest.
- Why is it harmful?
Our intestines also have their own ‘Cleaning System’ Which becomes active a few hours after eating and clears the remaining dirt and gas. But if you keep eating something or the other every hour, then this ‘cleansing system’ is unable to start its work, due to which the gas remains stuck in the stomach.
So the next time you feel heaviness or gas in your stomach, instead of blaming your food only, consider these three habits of yours. Maybe the solution lies not in your plate, but in your habits!
