UP Medical Hub: Not Lucknow or Gorakhpur, this city in UP is the true ‘stronghold of doctors’; there are 7 medical colleges in one division Meerut Medical Network: Meerut became the first choice of NEET students, know why this city is called the powerhouse of medical education.

Meerut medical colleges list 2026 : Uttar Pradesh has currently topped the list of states with the highest number of medical colleges in the country. Total number of medical colleges strengthening the medical infrastructure within the state 81 has reached, including two functional AIIMS. Usually, whenever there is talk of super-speciality treatment or rigorous medical education hubs, the first names that come to people’s mind are big cities like the capital Lucknow, Gorakhpur or Varanasi.

But amidst all this, there is a district of Uttar Pradesh which has created a unique and strong identity in the entire state in terms of the number of colleges and their geographical density. We are talking about Meerut, which is now being called the “Citadel of Doctors” at the local level and in the media circles.

Why is Meerut called the ‘Fortress of Doctors’?

The main reason behind Meerut being considered as a powerhouse of medical education is the tight concentration of medical institutions present in a single city and its surrounding divisions. A strong network of about 7 medical colleges, including state-run, government-aided and private, is functioning in this entire region.

These institutes offer not only basic medicine but also MBBS, post-graduation (PG), MD/MS and advanced research-oriented programs on a large scale. This is the reason why every year hundreds of new doctors pass out from here and come out to serve the country.

Structure of major medical institutions of Meerut division

To understand the vast medical ecosystem of Meerut, it is important to take a look at the main colleges and their functioning:

Name of College (Medical Colleges) Type of Ownership Key Feature and Role
LLRM Medical College, Meerut Fully Government The oldest and most prestigious institute, a huge teaching hospital and main hub for practical training.
Subharti Medical College, Meerut Private University Affiliated with Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, modern infrastructure and nursing and health-science courses.
NCIMS and Saraswati Institute (Hapur) Private/Divisional Affiliated (NCR/Hapur) Expansion of medical education in NCR-Meerut region, tight medical backup to rural and semi-urban population.

Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College (LLRM) While in the government sector it is known for providing accessible treatment to the general public and rigorous practical experience to the students, in the private sector the presence of Subharti Medical College and other institutions located on Hapur Road makes this entire belt a tight combined medical hub. Although this count may vary slightly depending on the district versus division in technical and administrative records, the entire region has become a single brand among the general public and students.

Big attraction for NEET aspirants and institutional affiliation

In view of this high density of medical colleges in Meerut, the Health and Education Department of Uttar Pradesh has also given special priority to the development of research facilities here.

Admission Process: All these medical institutions are affiliated to the prestigious Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Seats in all these colleges are filled entirely on the basis of stringent National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG and NEET-PG) scores and official counselling. Every year thousands of students from across the country give preference to these colleges of Meerut in their choice filling.

Why is the identity of Meerut different from that of Lucknow-Varanasi?

In comparison, the national prominence of cities like Lucknow, Varanasi and Gorakhpur is mainly due to their few but extremely large and premium institutions—like Lucknow’s KGMU and SGPGI, Varanasi’s BHU or Gorakhpur’s AIIMS.

On the contrary, the USP of Meerut is that within a small area, such a mixed and dense network of both government and private sectors has been created, which has made it the most accessible and attractive “medical-hub” of the state for the youth studying medicine.
