A kissing scene in this film created a huge uproar
In the initial phase of Madhuri Dixit’s career, the film ‘Dayavaan’ released in 1988 became the biggest controversy of her life. Actor Vinod Khanna was in the lead role with her in this film. In a song of the film, some very bold and intimate kissing scenes were filmed between Madhuri and Vinod Khanna, which surprised the society and audience of that time. Madhuri Dixit was criticized a lot for this scene and there was a demand to ban the film, calling it against Indian culture. Years later, Madhuri herself admitted in an interview that she deeply regretted doing that scene, but despite this huge infamy and controversy, the film proved to be a blockbuster at the box office.
When the Censor Board took a tough stance on bold songs and lyrics with double meanings
Director Subhash Ghai’s cult classic film ‘Khalnayak’, released in 1993, took Madhuri Dixit to the pinnacle of popularity, but at the same time the film was also embroiled in a major legal and social controversy. A song from the film ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ came into controversy as soon as it was released. Many social organizations and political parties had demanded a complete ban on the film, calling the lyrics of this song obscene and having double meaning. The matter even reached the court, but when the film was released in theatres, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri’s film set new earning records and this song is still counted among the most iconic songs of Bollywood.
There was strong opposition in rural areas against this film which attacks social evils.
Another very powerful and out-of-the-box film in Madhuri Dixit’s career was ‘Mrityudand’, which was released in the year 1997. Directed by Prakash Jha, this film showed the bitter reality of patriarchal society, women oppression and feudalism prevalent in the rural areas of Bihar. A certain section of the society had raised strong objections to some scenes and dialogues of Madhuri’s strong and rebellious character ‘Ketaki’ in the film. Attempts were made to stop the screening of the film at many places by terming it as spreading hatred in the society and demands for its ban were raised. However, critics and audiences welcomed the film and Madhuri was awarded many national and international awards for her excellent acting.
