News India Live, Digital Desk: In Sanatan Dharma, whenever we do any puja or auspicious work, lighting a ‘deepak’ or performing ‘havan’ is the most important part of it. We light a fire and offer oblations in it, but have you ever noticed how that fire i.e. Agni Dev accepts it?
It is mentioned in the Puranas and Upanishads (such as Mundak Upanishad) that Agni Dev has seven ‘jihvas’ i.e. tongues. These seven tongues are actually seven different powers or seven goddesses of fire. So let us unveil this mystery today and know who are these seven flames that take your sacrifice to heaven.
1. Kali (Karali or Kali)
This is considered to be the first tongue of fire. It has to do with destruction and change. When fire burns everything to ashes, it is in ‘black’ form. Here ‘Kali’ does not just mean the color, but the terrible velocity which destroys the old and makes way for the new.
2. Karali
This is the second tongue, which is considered very fierce and powerful. It represents the form of flames which are difficult to control. Invocation of Karali is very important in Tantric and special pujas.
3. Manojava
Manojva means ‘moving like the speed of the mind’. This is the tongue of fire which is considered faster than the speed of light. It is believed that this power is responsible for taking your faith and thoughts to the Gods and Goddesses in the blink of an eye.
4. Sulohita
As is clear from the name, ‘Lohita’ means red coloured. It is a beautiful red colored fire. It is a symbol of good luck and energy. Sulohita only accepts the prayers of the devotees who perform yagya for the prosperity of their home.
5. Sudhumravarna
The beautiful purple or dark smoke colored flame emanating from fire is called Sudhumravarna. It is considered to be related to meditation and yoga. It is related to the spiritual progress and mental peace of a person.
6. Sphulingini
When sparks burst from fire, it is called Sphulingini. It is as bright and flickering as lightning. This power is known to destroy evil and blow away obstacles like sparks.
7. Vishwaruchi
It is considered the seventh and most sacred tongue. ‘Vishvaruchi’ means that which includes the entire world. It is the golden form of fire that illuminates every living being and everything. Worship of this form is prominent in Satvik Yagyas.
Why is this secret important?
When we perform Havan and say ‘Swaha’, we are actually offering food to the Gods through these seven powers. The old sages believed that to understand the flames of fire is to actually understand God. It is fire that acts as a bridge between the humans on earth and the God of heaven.
Next time you light a lamp or sit in a havan, just meditate on these seven flames of fire. Your puja will become not just a ritual, but a deep experience.
Hopefully this small but wonderful mystery related to Agni Dev will definitely enlighten your lamp of knowledge!
