Preparation to increase MBBS and PG seats in NMCH, but a wall of misery stands in front of NMC’s approval.

News India Live, Digital Desk: The administration of Bihar’s prestigious Nalanda Medical College Hospital (NMCH) has started the exercise to increase the number of MBBS and PG seats for the academic session 2026-27. The college management wants to enroll more students to overcome the shortage of doctors in the state. However, amidst this good intention, the strict guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the dilapidated infrastructure of the college have emerged as the biggest obstacles. If the shortcomings are not removed in time, the dream of increasing seats may remain unfulfilled.

Mathematics of seats: Keeping an eye on 50 seats of PG and 100 seats of MBBS

In the proposal sent to NMC, the NMCH administration has sought to increase the number of MBBS seats from the current number to 250 and 50 additional seats in various wings of PG (Post Graduation). The college argues that the pressure of patients in the hospital is increasing, in such a situation it is mandatory to increase the number of resident doctors and trainee doctors. But as per the rules, as the seats increase, the capacity of faculty, hostels and classrooms also has to be increased in the same proportion, in which the college seems to be lagging behind at present.

Major flaws in infrastructure: From hostel to lab in bad condition

The preliminary internal assessment conducted by the NMC team has revealed several shocking shortcomings. According to the report, there are not enough hostels in the college for the students to stay and the condition of those that are there is very bad. Furthermore, pathology and anatomy labs lack modern equipment. The most serious issue is the faculty shortage; The posts of Professor and Associate Professor are lying vacant for a long time in many departments. Without fulfilling these standards, it seems impossible to get the green signal from NMC.

Appeal to the government for help: Will rejuvenation happen on time?

NMCH administration has written a letter to Bihar Health Department demanding immediate provision of funds and resources. The Principal of the Medical College says that if the government starts work on a war footing, we can remove most of the shortcomings by the time of the upcoming inspection. At present, the eyes of students and parents are on whether this historical medical institute of Patna will be able to improve its shortcomings and make the path of becoming a doctor easier for the youth of Bihar.
