News India Live, Digital Desk: It is not everyone’s cup of tea to admit their mistakes in the film industry, but Ram Gopal Varma is not one of those directors who twist things. Recently he released his 2007 film ‘silent’ A big and shocking statement has been given regarding this.
You might remember that when this film came out, everyone was surprised. The megastar of the century like Amitabh Bachchan was in a role who falls madly in love with a college going girl. People did not accept this and the film was badly flopped.
What did RGV say? (The Big Confession)
Ram Gopal Varma has now openly admitted that casting Amitabh Bachchan in this film was a ‘mis-calculation’. He says that “Amitabh Bachchan’s image is larger-than-life (Star Image).” People see him as a hero, a messiah or a strong man.
RGV said, “Amitabh’s character in Nishabd was scared, frightened and entangled in his own emotions. The audience could not see Amitabh Bachchan weak, helpless and crying in front of a little girl on screen. This was the reason why people rejected the film.”
Was it just a ‘casting’ mistake?
Ram Gopal Varma believes that there was no problem with the story of the film, but the actor he chose was too “big” for the role. He said that if he had cast an unknown face or an art cinema actor, perhaps people would have been able to understand the story. But when Amitabh came on screen, the audience only remembered his ‘superstar’ status, which did not match the character.
He clearly said, “Yes, it was a mistake. I should have respected the public image of a star like Amitabh Bachchan. The audience felt that I was showing their favorite star in the wrong light.”
What was the lesson learned?
From this statement it becomes clear that in Bollywood, not only story is everything, but ‘star power’ and ‘fans’ expectations’ also matter a lot. Amitabh Bachchan, who was liked by the people in ‘Sarkar’, was not liked by the audience in ‘Nishabd’ because it was different from their imagination.
Well, better late than never! At least Ramu admitted that he had made a mistake at that time.
