The reason for this is very interesting and a little worrying. The most important thing for artificial rain is – Clouds and moisture in the sky.

In simple words, the process of cloud seeding involves spraying certain chemicals (such as silver iodide) into already existing clouds, which speeds up the process of rainfall. This technique does not ‘create’ clouds, but ‘forces’ them to produce rain.

According to meteorologists, at present there are neither enough clouds in the sky of Delhi nor enough moisture in the air, which is necessary to make this process successful. The weather remains dry and is likely to remain so for many days to come. That is, when Delhi needs it the most, nature itself is not cooperating.

Now what next?

• Increasing pollution: According to SAFAR-India, Delhi’s average air quality index (AQI) remains in the ‘poor’ category above 200 and is expected to deteriorate further in the coming days.
• Knock of winter: As winter progresses, the wind speed will decrease, due to which the pollutant particles will start accumulating low in the air and the situation will become more serious.

After the artificial rain plan has been postponed, now the Delhi government and its residents will have to rely on traditional methods to fight pollution, such as strictly following the GRAP rules. At present, it seems that the people of Delhi will have to fight the battle for their own breath this time too.
