Two very ambitious projects passing through Uttar Pradesh—the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway and the Vindhya-Purvanchal Link Expressway—are set to change the entire mobility map between the northern and eastern parts of the country. After the complete completion of these two expressways, an uninterrupted, modern and high-speed expressway network will be established from the country’s capital Delhi to West Bengal’s capital Kolkata. Currently, it takes a long time ranging from 17 to 24 hours to reach Kolkata from Delhi through traditional road routes or trains. But once this new expressway network becomes operational, this tiring journey will reduce to just 12 to 13 hours.
From DND flyover to Kolkata: This is how the country’s biggest expressways will be connected.
This huge corridor is being built not by any single road, but by connecting many of the top expressways of the country. This super-fast route will start from the DND flyover of Delhi. From here the vehicles will enter Yamuna Expressway, which will further connect directly to Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Ganga Expressway, Vindhya Expressway and then Vindhya-Purvanchal Link Expressway. The biggest benefit of this strong and seamless interconnectivity will be that passengers will be able to complete the journey from Delhi to Varanasi in just 6 to 7 hours without any jam or interruption, whereas the journey from Varanasi to Kolkata will be completed in just 6 hours.
610 KM long project being built at a cost of ₹35,000 crore, 5 km long tunnel will be built in Kaimur
This 610 km long and six-lane greenfield expressway project being built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is estimated to cost around ₹ 35,000 crore. This mega project has been targeted to be completely opened to the public from the year 2027 to 2028. Starting from Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh, this expressway will pass through many major business districts of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. To overcome the geographical obstacles in the construction of this route, a 5 kilometer long modern tunnel is being constructed between the difficult hills of Kaimur in Bihar, which will become a wonderful example of Indian engineering.
Goods and trade will reach eastern ports and UP’s expressway grid will get new momentum.
The launch of this expressway grid will not only save time and fuel for common travelers, but will also directly halve the time of freight transportation and logistics from the industrial hubs of North India to the ports of East India. This will give a tremendous boost to international and interstate trade activities. Additionally, within Uttar Pradesh also, the interconnectivity of Agra-Lucknow, Purvanchal and Ganga Expressways is creating a strong network grid within the state. With this, all the districts of UP will be connected to each other in a better way, which will give new heights to the overall economic development of the state.
