News India Live, Digital Desk: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has made his opinion clear about the biggest challenges facing the country’s legal system. During an important program, he referred to the current state of the judiciary and highlighted the obstacles that make the process of getting justice slow and complicated. His address has once again sparked a national debate on the need for judicial reforms.
Pile of pending cases and lack of infrastructure
The CJI stressed that the increasing number of pending cases in courts is the biggest concern today. Delay in providing justice not only tests the patience of the litigants, but it also affects the confidence of the common man in the justice system. He clarified that the need of the hour is to improve the infrastructure and fill the vacant posts of judges, from the lower courts to the higher judiciary.
Simplification of legal process and use of technology
The Chief Justice also considered the complexity of the legal language and procedures as a major challenge. He said that the justice system should be such that a common citizen can understand it. In the modern era, adopting technology (AI and digitalization) has no longer become an option but a necessity. According to CJI, if we use e-courts and digital databases properly, the speed of disposal of cases can increase significantly.
Justice should be within the reach of the common man
A major part of the address focused on accessibility of justice. CJI Surya Kant expressed concern that the high cost of legal battles is keeping the poor and the underprivileged away from justice. He stressed on further strengthening of legal aid clinics and free legal services so that even the person at the last rung of the society can get timely justice. His statement is being seen as a judicial roadmap for the future.
