The situation has become extremely tense and bloody amid the atmosphere of assembly elections in Pakistan’s illegally occupied Kashmir i.e. PoK. At least 30 civilians and protesters have been killed in violent action by Pakistani army and security forces in the last 48 hours during the election process. According to Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), 25 people lost their lives on Monday and 5 on Tuesday in this bloody conflict. The elections took place amid massive political unrest, crackdowns, massive rigging and a complete internet blackout. Human rights organizations and local people clearly allege that the Pakistani Army has resorted to indiscriminate firing to crush the protests and has pushed the area under the shadow of terror.
Amnesty International strongly condemns and demands independent investigation
After this horrific human rights violation and violent incidents, sharp reactions are coming out against the Pakistani administration all over the world. Amnesty South Asia’s acting director Isabelle Lacy has issued a sharp statement saying that this action taken by the security forces on the protesters in PoK is part of Pakistan’s old and illegal tradition of violence, under which it wants to suppress every voice. Amnesty International has demanded that there be an immediate, fully independent and transparent investigation into this use of force by security forces. The organization has also expressed deep concern over the fact that since June 5, internet and mobile services have been completely disrupted in the entire region, due to which the ground reality is being prevented from being revealed to the world. Amnesty has called on the Government of Pakistan to immediately restore all communication channels and allow independent media and observers access to the area.
What is the whole movement and why is Islamabad angry?
This entire controversy and mass movement originally started under the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee i.e. JAAC. The movement began with a demand to abolish 12 seats in the PoK Assembly reserved for refugees who had settled in mainland Pakistan after the partition of 1947. Over time, this demand became the biggest popular uprising in the region against Pakistani rule in the last several decades, in which Islamabad’s illegal control and the oppressive attitude of the Pakistani army are being fiercely opposed. The situation has become so bad that Pakistani authorities have even banned JAAC citing anti-terrorism laws. This phase of violence is not limited to just the last two days, but since the beginning of June, a total of more than 40 people have lost their lives in this entire movement, including both protesters and security personnel.
Murder of JAAC founder’s brother amid elections and protests abroad
The scope of this brutal action of the Pakistani Army has spread from common citizens to the families of prominent leaders of the movement. According to the report of news agency ANI, JAAC core team member Imtiaz Aslam has revealed that during this repressive action, Usman Nazir, younger brother of the movement’s founder Omar Nazir Kashmiri, has also been killed. There has been anger in foreign countries also in protest against this inhuman murder and atrocities of Pakistani Army. A large number of JAAC supporters and people of the expatriate Kashmiri community demonstrated strongly outside the Pakistani Consulate located in Bradford city of United Kingdom and raised slogans against Pakistan. According to the latest data of JAAC, since the beginning of June, Pakistani Army and security forces have made at least 67 people victims of their bullets in this area, due to which there is an atmosphere of huge anger inside and outside PoK.
