In North India, especially Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, a special fragrance has started to waft in the air. People are eagerly waiting for that great festival, which is the biggest symbol of faith, devotion and dedication towards nature – Chhath Puja. This four-day difficult festival of worshiping Sun God is going to start in just a few days.
When is Chhath festival starting?
This year this great festival of Surya worship will start from 25th October and will continue till 28th October.
- 25 October (1st day) – Nahay-Khay: On this day, devotees take a holy dip in a river or pond and consume satvik food, and this is where the great festival begins.
- 26 October (2nd day) – Kharna: This day is very difficult. The devotees observe fast throughout the day without drinking water and in the evening make prasad of jaggery and rice kheer (rasiyav) and roti. After consuming this prasad, their most rigorous 36-hour Nirjala fast begins.
- 27 October (3rd day) – Evening Arghya: On this day, all the fasting people and their families gather at the ghats and offer milk and water to the setting sun.
- 28 October (fourth day) – Usha Arghya: On the last day of the festival, early in the morning everyone offers Arghya to the rising sun. With this Arghya, Chhath Puja ends and the devotees break their 36-hour long fast.
