Kapurthala: When a person moves forward with his passion, hard work and dedication, one day he not only becomes a leader in his field but also earns a respected position. Following the footsteps of such great personalities proves that only by bearing the heat of struggle one can develop as Kundan. Amarjot Singh, a state awardee and head of the sports department of PM Shri Government Senior Secondary Multipurpose School, Patiala, has earned the title of becoming an international coach and adjudicator in basketball.
Amarjot was born to Master Bikram Singh in Mehtot village of Ropar district. But due to his father’s transfer he got a chance to stay in Mehtot for five years. His father, who was an international level Kabaddi player of his time, believed that studies and sports were two important aspects of life. As soon as Amarjot understood this, he started seeing his future in basketball along with schooling from Chamkaur Sahib. Amarjot proudly tells that his father inspired the philosophical coach Jasbir Singh to organize basketball trials at Mahindra College, Patiala. Coach Jasbir was not only a trainer but he also played an important role in the development of the overall personality of the players.
While graduating from Mahindra College, Amarjot played in the All India Inter University four times at Punjabi University, Patiala and became a part of the gold medalist team. From here his dream became to play senior national for Punjab. While giving physical test for DPD at Government Physical Education College, Patiala, Professor Kartar Singh Pannu told him about his father’s achievements, which further enhanced Amarjot’s stature. While doing MPD in the same college, Amarjot joined Indian Railways as a professional basketball player.
Amarjot told that he continued playing in the All India Railway Championship for five years, but always kept moving forward keeping his father’s ideal life in mind. The constructive activities of Coach Jasbir Singh, Principal Captain Bhupinder Singh Punia and Professor Dr. Balbir Singh Anand in his life kept his dream of becoming a sports teacher alive. When he was appointed to the post of Director of Physical Education in the Education Department of Punjab, his dreams got a new direction.
His wife Irwan Kaur, a national level handball and football player, works as a SST teacher in a multipurpose school of the education department. His daughter Gurleen is pursuing higher education in Canada after graduation in Pharmacy, while his son Sahajdeep Singh is a sports teacher. Navdeep Kaur is Associate Professor of Economics at Punjabi University.
Amarjot says that his three generations’ association with the teaching field makes his house prestigious as the home of teachers. Wherever he worked, he not only built basketball grounds but also trained players. After the Government Senior Secondary School Tripri, now the Multipurpose School of Punjab is an institution which has three international level basketball grounds and a sports hostel. Every year, more than fifty players participate in state level championships, and dozens of players are proving their talent at national and international levels.
Achievements at national and international level
Coach Amarjot Singh’s sports record is golden, due to which Multipurpose Sports Wing Patiala always becomes champion. He has been serving as the Technical Chairman of the Punjab Selection Committee for the last ten years and is also a referee recognized by the Basketball Federation of India and the International Basketball Association. Amarjot says that in his childhood, when he used to see birds flying, his mind also started flying. His services in basketball competitions at the international level made his dreams come true. He has represented India in international level tournaments more than twenty times.

For state award winner Amarjot Singh, the field of sports is a field of honour. He has received hundreds of honors at the district, state, national and international levels, but receiving awards from the Department, Punjab School, State Government on the occasion of Teacher’s Day in the field of education is a special achievement for him. His family includes basketball sports federation officials, coaches and players, who make him proud. Amarjot believes that in a society where there is sports culture, social and life values develop.
