PAN Aadhaar Link Online: How to link PAN card with Aadhaar? Know the online step-by-step process, late fees and complete method to check status.

According to the rules of the Income Tax Department, it is mandatory for all PAN cardholders in the country to link their PAN with Aadhaar. After the expiry of the stipulated time, the PAN cards of those taxpayers who have not linked the two documents have been declared ‘inoperative’. Inoperative PAN not only hinders filing of income tax returns (ITR) and getting tax refunds but also leads to loss in opening new accounts in banks, investing in mutual funds and TDS deduction rates. If your PAN is not yet linked to Aadhaar or has been deactivated, you can reactivate it by paying the prescribed late fee of ₹ 1,000 through the official e-filing portal of Income Tax.

Initially this service was provided free of cost by the government, but now in the form of late fee. Late fee of ₹1,000 Payment is mandatory.

  • This payment is made in the form of a single challan through the ‘e-Pay Tax’ facility on the e-filing portal.

  • Minor Head while generating challan ‘500 (Other Receipts)’ And the respective assessment year has to be selected.

  • Fees can be paid through Net Banking, Debit Card, RTGS/NEFT or UPI.

Many times, linking request gets rejected due to difference in spelling of name, father’s name or date of birth recorded in PAN card and Aadhar card. In such situation:

  • First of all decide in which document the information is incorrect.

  • If there is a mistake in the PAN card, fill the PAN correction form through NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL portal.

  • If the details in the Aadhaar card are incorrect, get the demographic details corrected by visiting UIDAI’s MyAadhaar portal or the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

  • Complete the linking process again only after the name, date of birth and gender are completely identical in both the documents.

Under Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, certain categories of citizens are exempted from the requirement of linking PAN-Aadhaar:

  • Residents of the states of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Meghalaya.

  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

  • Persons who are not citizens of India.

  • Senior citizens aged 80 years or above (Super Senior Citizens).

After challan payment and linking request is successfully submitted, verification is done by UIDAI and PAN is usually reactivated within a few days.
