Lucknow: Today, on the occasion of World Dance Day, we are introducing you to a person who has not only lived the nuances of classical dance, but has also fought a silent war against the stereotypes and discrimination of the society. This is the story of Devika Devendra S Mangalamukhi, who is a transgender woman as well as a dedicated practitioner of Kathak. The legacy of great gurus and the journey of spiritual practice
Devika’s dedication towards dance is deep. He is a part of the legacy of Kathak which was nurtured by the great Acharya Pandit Lachu Maharaj Ji, known as ‘Lasya Samrat’ and the magician of acting. His sadhana is not limited to just the beat of his feet, but it is an expression of his soul, which he has honed through years of hard work and unwavering devotion.
Discrimination weighs heavy on talent
Despite being a skilled artist, Devika’s journey has not been easy. Not only this, even after applying for the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award this year, he was not selected, which hurt him mentally.
The power of art: beyond the boundaries of gender and caste
Despite all the difficulties and neglect, Devika’s courage has not wavered. She strongly believes that art does not belong to any gender, caste or boundary. According to him, “Art is the call of every soul that wants to express itself.” These bitter experiences have made Devika stronger. Today, on World Dance Day, she pays tribute to the legacy of her gurus and takes a pledge that she will continue to move ahead on the path of her art with courage and respect.
