Indonesia has banned the sale and use of Apple's iPhone 16 in the country. Indonesia's Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita announced that any iPhone 16 sold in Indonesia is illegal. It also warned consumers against buying the iPhone 16 abroad.
Kartasasmita said that if someone runs an iPhone 16 in Indonesia, it means the device is illegal. And asked to inform if anyone is using it. Kartasasmita said that no International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certificate has been issued for the iPhone 16 in Indonesia.
Why ban on iPhone 16?
This ban has been imposed due to Apple's unfulfilled promise to invest in Indonesia. It was reported that tech giant Apple has invested 1.48 trillion rupees ($95 million) of the promised 1.71 trillion rupees, leaving a shortfall of 230 billion rupees ($14.75 million). Kartasmita said in his office that the Industry Ministry has not yet been able to issue a permit for the iPhone 16, as there are still some commitments that Apple has to fulfill. Earlier this month, the minister announced that Apple's iPhone 16 cannot be sold in Indonesia for now. Since the TKDN certificate has not yet been approved, further investment from Apple is awaited.
First, Apple kept its investment promise
TKDN certification requires companies to meet 40 percent local content requirements to sell their products in Indonesia. The certification is directly linked to Apple's plan to set up research and development facilities in the country, known as Apple Academy. The announcement comes despite Apple CEO Tim Cook's visit to Jakarta in April. Where he discussed possible production plans with President Joko Widodo.
