The Special MP-MLA Court of Lucknow has honorably acquitted Samajwadi Party MLA from Gosaiganj, Ayodhya and strongman leader Abhay Singh in a case of double murder. Due to lack of evidence in this nearly 23 year old case, the court has acquitted Abhay Singh and four other accused.

This case is of the year 2001, when there was massive firing on Jail Road located in the posh area of Lucknow. Those considered close to Mukhtar Ansari were involved in this attack. Akhilesh Singh And one of his companions was publicly murdered. This double murder had raised serious questions on the law and order situation of UP at that time. The police had registered an FIR against Abhay Singh, Vikas Singh and others in this case.
Why did the court acquit?
A long hearing of this case took place before the special judge of MP-MLA court. The prosecution failed to present concrete evidence against the accused in this case. During the hearing, many important witnesses turned hostile from their statements, due to which Abhay Singh could not be convicted. The court made it clear in its decision that no one can be held guilty merely on the basis of suspicion and due to lack of sufficient evidence all the accused are released.

Abhay Singh is currently a SP MLA and during the recent Rajya Sabha elections, there was a lot of discussion about his ‘cross voting’. This legal victory is being seen as a big relief for him and his supporters. After the verdict, Abhay Singh expressed his confidence in the judiciary and said that a conspiracy was hatched to implicate him, but ultimately the truth has prevailed.

Along with Abhay Singh, Vikas Singh and two other people named in this case have also been acquitted by the court. After this decision, the file of Jail Road massacre is now on the verge of being legally closed. However, there are speculations that the aggrieved party or the prosecution may approach the High Court against this decision.
