Physical Activity: Your desk job has become a new cigarette expert of ‘death’, know how to stay active by sitting for 8 hours!

News India Live, Digital Desk: Physical Activity: Imagine… You are harming your health without touching cigarettes, just like a chain smoker. Shocked? Experts say that sitting in one place for 8-9 consecutive hours, working (desk job) has become a new-age ‘smoking’-that is, it is as dangerous as smoking. Our comfortable office chair is gradually pushing us towards many serious diseases, which often realizes when it is too late.

The modern lifestyle has made us motionless. Whether it is at home or in office, working in front of a laptop or computer for hours is now common. But this ‘new normal’ is overshadowing our health. Sitting continuously does not only increase obesity, but also increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, back pain, neck pain, and even certain types of cancer. Our body is made for movement, not to stay stable.

So leave the desk job? no way! Just work with ‘understanding’:

The good news is that you can reduce this danger even without leaving your desk job. Just by making small changes in your habits, you can save your health. Here are some tips that will help you to be active while sitting on the desk:

1. A ‘Micro Break’ every 30 minutes:
Set the alarm! Get up from your chair every 30-45 minutes.

  • Stand for just 1-2 minutes, stretch a little.

  • Go to fill the water bottle.

  • Go to their desk to ask the colling to ask something, not chat.

  • Standing in one place can do some light stretching for 1 minute.

2. Balance between sitting and standing:
If possible, use a standing desk. This will give you the option to stand while working.

3. Moving meeting:
For small meetings, select the option of ‘Walk and Talk’ meetings. With this, you will be able to discuss the work.

4. Exercise during work:
Some small exercises can be done by sitting on your chair:

  • Seated leg rays: Sitting on the chair, straighten each leg and stop it in the air for some time.

  • Eye exercises: Close the eyes for a while, or focus on items far and nearby so that the eyes are relaxed.

  • Neck and Shoulder Stretches: Light-lightnings and stretching can reduce neck and shoulder pain.

  • Arm and Wrist Strengthaning: You can do wrist and light exercise with small things.

5. Keep drinking water, keep going:
Keep your water bottle away, so that you have to get up again and again to get water. This will help in both hydrated stay and grow.

6. Walking after lunch:
After lunch, even if for 10–15 minutes, do a small walk in or outside the office premises. It is also good for digestion and will keep the body active.

Remember, these small changes will help you give you a long and healthy life. The habit of sticking to your chair can make you a victim of ‘silent killer’ diseases, so adopt the mantra of activeness in your lifestyle from today itself!
