The atmosphere on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan has become extremely tense. There are reports that there has been a fierce clash between the armies of the two countries, in which Afghanistan has created a sensation by claiming that it has killed 58 Pakistani soldiers. Taliban says that this action has been taken in response to air strikes by Pakistan.
Amidst all this uproar, another news has caught everyone’s attention – the defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. This agreement was signed in September last year and it simply means that if any country attacks Pakistan, it will also be considered an attack on Saudi Arabia. Now the question is arising whether Saudi Arabia will openly support Pakistan in this fight?
What does Saudi Arabia have to say?
Even though on paper Saudi Arabia has become Pakistan’s security guarantor, the ground reality looks a little different. Till now, Saudi Arabia has advised both the countries to maintain peace instead of taking any side in this matter. In a statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry, it has been said that they are concerned about the increasing tension on the border and want both Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint and resolve the issue through dialogue.
Saudi Arabia has clearly said that it is against any kind of violence and wants peace in the region. That is, on one side there is a defense agreement and on the other side there is an appeal for peace. It is not yet clear whether Saudi Arabia will directly help Pakistan in this war or not.
What happened on the border?
This entire controversy started when Afghan fighters suddenly attacked several border posts adjacent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan of Pakistan. Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed in a press conference that their troops not only killed 58 Pakistani soldiers but also captured 25 military posts. He also says that about 30 Pakistani soldiers have also been injured in this attack.
At present, the situation on the border remains serious and now everyone’s eyes are on whether Saudi Arabia remains limited to mere rhetoric or comes forward to help its friend Pakistan.
