News India Live, Digital Desk: With the sound of Assam Assembly elections 2026, the excitement in the politics of the state has intensified. This time, the challenges for the BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seem to be less from outside and more from within the alliance. The tussle between NDA constituents regarding seat sharing has increased the concern of strategists.
Growing ambitions of allies: AGP and BPF’s stance tough
Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), which has been a trusted ally of BJP since 2014, is trying hard to increase its stake in the electoral field this time. If we look at the last 2021 election results, AGP had tried its luck on 29 seats, out of which there was a ‘friendly fight’ with BJP on 3 seats. This time the party is working on a strategy to increase its number of seats and influence.
Tricky mathematics in Bodoland
The biggest puzzle for the alliance remains the Bodoland area. The demands of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and other regional parties are proving to be a headache for the BJP. These parties, which have a strong hold at the local level, are demanding more seats, due to which there is a strong possibility of a one-on-one fight between the alliance partners in many constituencies.
BJP’s strategy and the risk of ‘friendly fight’
Although Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially denied any major tension, he has not completely ruled out the possibility of a ‘friendly fight’. The challenge for BJP is to keep its allies satisfied and not let its victory margin reduce. If allies field different candidates, the opposition camp can directly benefit from it.
Opposition’s preparation: Gaurav Gogoi’s emphasis on unity
On the other hand, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi seems confident about the unity of the alliance. He clarified that the next 30 days are decisive for the future of Assam and the opposition is preparing to run a coordinated campaign across the state. Congress is eyeing this ongoing tussle within the NDA, so that it can take advantage of the polarization of votes.
