How was Lord Chitragupta born? (genesis story)
The story starts with the creation of the universe. When Lord Brahma appeared on the lotus that emerged from the navel of Lord Vishnu, he began the creation of the world. He created gods, demons, humans, animals and birds. In this sequence, he also gave birth to Dharmaraj Yamraj, whose job was to punish the living beings according to their deeds.
When Yamraj’s work became too much, he asked Lord Brahma for an assistant who was knowledgeable and would never make any mistakes. Hearing this demand of Yamraj, Brahma ji went into deep meditation. He continued doing penance for a thousand years. When he opened his eyes, there was a divine man standing in front of him, holding a pen and a pencil in his hands.
Since this man was born from the body of Lord Brahma, hence he ‘Kayastha’called and their name ‘Chitragupta’Fell. Since then, Lord Chitragupta, as an associate of Yamraj, started keeping track of the deeds of every living being.
A story that changed the heart of a cruel king
Another story is of a king whose heart was changed by Chitragupta puja. A king named Saudas was very tyrannical, all the subjects were unhappy with him. One day when he was roaming around, he saw a Brahmin performing puja. The king curiously asked, “Who are you worshipping?”
The Brahmin replied, “Today is Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, I am worshiping Lord Chitragupta who keeps track of deeds and grants freedom from sins.” The king laughed after hearing this and jokingly offered all the puja material to Lord Chitragupta.
But the effect of that puja was such that the king’s harsh mind changed. He realized his mistakes. Returning to the palace, he worshiped Lord Chitragupta with proper rituals. It is said that due to the effect of this puja, the king was freed from all his sins and after death he got a place in heaven.
