According to the scriptures, whenever a married man performs any religious ritual or divine work, it is considered mandatory and auspicious for his wife to sit on his right side.

If the story of Lord Satyanarayan is being narrated in the house, if any yagya, havan or special puja is going on, then the wife will always sit on the right side of the husband. Apart from this, it is according to the scriptures for the wife to sit on the right side in the following circumstances:

  • Kanyadaan: At the time of marriage, while donating the daughter and taking sacred vows.

  • Sanskar and fast: During the naming ceremony of the child or while observing any religious fast.

  • Father’s work: In Shraddha, Tarpan and rituals related to ancestors.

  • Charity and pilgrimage: While donating to someone, taking a holy bath or while worshiping on any special festival.

When should the wife’s place be on the left side?

According to the rules of the scriptures, in some special and worldly circumstances, the wife is required to live on the left side of the husband. In matters related to love, material happiness and family responsibilities, the wife’s place is on the left side. The wife should be on the left on these major occasions:

  • Sindoordan: During the ceremony of donating vermilion at the time of marriage.

  • While taking blessings: After the puja, when blessings are being taken from Brahmins or elders of the house.

  • Salutation to the feet: While washing the feet of elders or while respecting them.
