The state government has taken a major step with the aim of strengthening primary health services and reducing maternal-child mortality rate in rural and semi-urban areas of Bihar. Bihar Health Department and State Health Committee (SHSB) have announced about the vacant posts across the state. 21,000 ASHA workers (Accredited Social Health Activist – ASHA) Official preparations have been intensified to start new recruitment on the posts. The Health Department has issued instructions to the Civil Surgeons and District Health Committees of all 38 districts to immediately send the final roster and verification report of the vacant posts at the Gram Panchayat and Ward level to the headquarters, after which the official recruitment advertisement will be issued.
According to the circular issued by the Health Department, the posts of Asha workers under many Primary Health Centers (PHC), Additional Primary Health Centers (APHC) and Health and Wellness Centers in the state are vacant for a long time.

Roster Clearance and Verification: All districts have been directed to tally the correct number of vacancies based on population ratio (one ASHA worker per 1000 population) in their respective gram panchayats and urban wards.

Timed Ads: After getting the roster clearance from the district level, the date of online/offline application process will be announced on the official website of the State Health Society (statehealthsocietybihar.org) and district level portal.
The main rules prescribed for ASHA worker recruitment in Bihar are as follows:

Educational qualification: Candidate must have minimum qualification from any recognized board. 10th (Matric) pass It is mandatory to have.

Age Limit: minimum age 25 years and maximum age 45 years It has been determined.

Priority of local resident: It is necessary for the applicant to be a permanent resident of the concerned Gram Panchayat/Ward and a married/widowed/divorced woman, so that she can establish better communication with the local community.

Communication Skills: The applicant should have understanding of local language/dialect and readiness to work among the community.
ASHA workers are selected on the basis of merit and consent of the local community:

application submission: Candidates will submit the application in the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO) office, Primary Health Center (PHC) or concerned Panchayat office within the prescribed date.

Verification in Gram Sabha: After scrutiny of the applications received, the list of eligible candidates is kept in the ‘General Sabha’ or ‘Gram Sabha’ of the concerned Panchayat.

Final Approval: After the recommendation of Gram Sabha and Block Health Committee, the selected candidates are sent for appointment letter and basic training by the District Health Committee (Civil Surgeon Office).
Asha workers are the most important link in the rural health system. Their major responsibilities include timely registration of pregnant women, taking them to hospital for institutional delivery, full vaccination of newborns, providing information on family planning and supporting national health programs (e.g. TB, anemia control). In addition to the fixed monthly honorarium, ASHA workers are provided work-based incentives (DBT) directly into their bank accounts (DBT) on various health campaigns and deliveries by the state and central governments.
