In Sanatan Dharma, the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada (Bhadon) month is known as ‘Bahula Chaturthi’ or ‘Bahula Chauth’. It is also called ‘Bol Chauth’ in many places. This holy fast is especially observed by mothers to pray for their children’s good health, long life, protection from troubles and bright future. Along with this, for those couples who have been waiting for the happiness of having a child for a long time, fasting on this day and serving mother cow is considered to be fruitful. According to religious beliefs, on the day of Bahula Chauth, jointly worshiping Lord Shri Krishna, Lord Shri Ganesha and Kamdhenu Swarupa ‘Bahula Cow’ and its calf brings happiness and prosperity in the house and gives blessings for the growth of descendants.
According to the calendar, the festival of Bahula Chauth is celebrated on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. On this day, worship during Pradosh period in the evening has special significance.

If you are observing this fast for the birth of a child or for the safety of your children, then perform the puja in this manner:

Morning resolution: Get up in the morning before sunrise, take bath and wear clean clothes. Taking water, Akshat and flowers in hand, pledge to fast for the well-being of the child and fulfillment of his wishes.

Installation of clay statues: Spread a yellow or red cloth on a clean platform at the place of worship. Install the idol of Lord Shri Krishna, Shri Ganesha along with Bahula cow and its calf made of clay on it. If live cows and calves are available, then worship them directly.

Abhishek and adornment with rituals: Bathe the mother cow and calf with water, apply tilak of roli, sandalwood and turmeric. Apply vermillion and ghee on the horns of the cow and garland her with fresh flowers.

Special offerings and offerings: Offer green fodder, barley, roasted gram, sweet pedas made from wheat flour and jaggery to mother cow. Offer butter-mishri to Lord Krishna and Durva and Modak to Lord Ganesha.

Katha Shravan and Aarti: Sit in front of the post and listen or recite the mythological fast story of the Bahula cow and the lion. After this, light incense sticks and perform aarti of Lord Krishna and Mother Cow.

Arghya to the moon: At the time of moonrise at night, mix raw milk, water, Akshat and Roli in a copper or silver pot and offer Arghya to the moon and pray for the long life of the child.

Abstain from milk and dairy products: The most important and mandatory rule of this fast is that the fasting woman should not consume anything made from cow’s milk, curd, ghee, butter or cheese on this day. It is believed that only the calf has the right over the milk on this day.

Prohibition of objects cut with knives: On the day of Bahula Chauth, consumption of vegetables, fruits and grains cut with a knife or sickle is avoided. On this day, fasting women consume only uncut satvik things, fruits or roasted grains.

Importance of cow service: Do not torture or abuse a cow or calf on this day under any circumstances. If there is a cow shed near your house, then go there and feed fodder and water to the cows with your own hands.
According to the legend, in the Dwapara Yuga, Lord Shri Krishna took the form of a ferocious Singh (lion) to test the integrity and dutifulness of a Kamdhenu cow named ‘Bahula’. When the lion wanted to make Bahula its prey in the forest, Bahula folded her hands and pleaded that her little calf was hungry at home; She will return herself after feeding him milk. When Singh expressed disbelief, Bahula took the oath of truth and religion. Keeping her word, when Bahula presented herself before the lion at the appointed time after feeding her calf and leaving it safe, Lord Shri Krishna appeared in his true form. Pleased with Bahula’s truth, love and sacrifice, God gave a boon that whichever devotee worships Bahula cow on Bhadrapada Krishna Chaturthi, his children will never face any trouble and even the empty lap will be filled with the cries of the children.
