News India Live, Digital Desk: The biggest court of the country, where the noise of arguments and cross-examination of justice goes on every moment, suddenly fell into a deep silence this morning. Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi 78th death anniversary On the occasion, everything came to a standstill with the sound of ‘siren’ in the corridors and court rooms of the Supreme Court. From the Chief Justice (CJI) to senior lawyers and court staff, everyone remembered Bapu’s sacrifice by observing 2-minute silence.
That 2 minutes of ‘disciplined silence’
Exactly at 11:00 am, as soon as the siren sounded in memory of the martyrs, the scene at the Supreme Court changed completely:
Courtroom proceedings halted: In the middle of the ongoing hearing, the judges stood up from their seats and the lawyers closed their files.
Echo of silence: The campus which is usually full of hustle and bustle, there was only peace there. This scene was showing the respect of the judiciary towards Bapu’s principles of truth and non-violence.
Dignity of Martyr’s Day: Similar tributes were paid in the Supreme Court as well as in the Delhi High Court and district courts.

Along with this silence of the Supreme Court, President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries offered flowers at Bapu’s Samadhi at Rajghat. The army soldiers also bowed their arms and saluted the Father of the Nation.
Importance of ‘Martyr’s Day’
30 January is celebrated every year as ‘Martyrs’ Day’ in India. On this day in 1948, Nathuram Godse assassinated Bapu during a prayer meeting at Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti). The Supreme Court has a tradition of observing silence on this day every year, which reminds that the foundation of justice should always rest on peace and truth.
