US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire on the ongoing military action against Iran. Immediately after Trump’s announcement, Iran has also adopted a positive attitude and agreed to provide safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the most important route for global oil supply. Pakistan’s mediation has played a decisive role in this historic agreement.
Trump’s U-turn: Deadline for ‘devastating attack’ postponed
President Trump, who till now was warning Iran to ‘destroy the entire civilization’, has shown softness in his stance. Trump posted on ‘Truth Social’ and said that on the request of Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, he has agreed to stop bombing Iran. Trump said, “We are very close to a long-term peace with Iran and a permanent agreement in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which is a solid basis for negotiations.”
Pakistan’s mediation: Big meeting to be held in Islamabad on April 10
The credit for implementing this ceasefire goes to Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Sharif informed on social media platform X that America and Iran are ready to immediately stop war on every front including Lebanon. He has invited delegations from both the countries to visit Islamabad on Friday, 10 April 2026, where talks will be held for a permanent solution to the disputes.
Iran’s stance: ‘Ceasefire does not mean defeat, but victory’
Iranian Foreign Minister Saeed Abbas Araghchi has confirmed that if the attacks stop, Iran’s military will end its defensive operations and allow safe passage to ships through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has termed it as its ‘great victory’. The Council claims that the enemy (America) was begging for a ceasefire for a month and Iran has accepted the ceasefire on its own terms. People have started celebrating this announcement on the streets of Tehran.
The world heaved a sigh of relief with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The blockage of the Strait of Hormuz had disrupted about 20% of global oil supply, causing worldwide crude oil prices to surge by as much as 70%. Now the opening of this route with the ceasefire will give a big boost to the global economy. However, Iran has made it clear that this is only a temporary arrangement. If no concrete result is achieved in the talks on April 10, tensions may increase again.
