Every day starts not only with the rays of the sun but also with the new prices of petrol and diesel affecting our pockets. Every day at 6 am, the country’s major oil marketing companies (OMCs)—Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum—release the latest fuel rates. These rates are determined on the basis of crude oil prices in the international market and the position of the rupee against the dollar. Be it a common citizen going to office or a businessman carrying daily goods, the price of petrol and diesel has a direct impact on everyone’s life and budget.

Why have prices remained almost stable for the last two years?
The central government and many state governments had cut taxes from May 2022 onwards, after which the retail prices of petrol and diesel are seeing stability to a great extent. Although the price of crude oil keeps fluctuating in the international market, the prices in the domestic market have been kept balanced to protect the Indian consumers from the shock of inflation. The final price of petrol and diesel in any city mainly depends on five factors – international crude oil rates, dollar-rupee exchange rate, taxes of central and state governments, cost of refining crude oil and demand-supply balance in the market.
