A new rule has been implemented for immigrants in the US, under which it has become mandatory for all non-citizens to keep evidence of their legal status at all times. The rule has become effective from April 11 and is considered part of the policy of Donald Trump Administration that aims to identify illegal immigrants in the US and expel them from the country.
This rule is part of the executive order of the US President whose title is – “Protection of American people against the invasion.” Under this order, it has been made mandatory to register illegal immigrants and keep the necessary documents together.
Historical background of rules
The new rule ‘Alien Registration Recovery’ (ARR) is based on the 1940 Alien Registration Act, which was passed due to the threat of war at that time. However, that law was not actively implemented for years. Now the Trump administration has decided to implement it freshly.
Who will have to register?
The new rule mainly affects illegal or unspecified immigrants. Those who live in non-citizens for 30 days or more in the US, and those who are more than 14 years of age, will inevitably have to register ‘Form G-325R’ and register.
If a person enters the US on 11 April 2025 or after, then it is necessary to register within 30 days of arrival. Those who do not follow the rules may have fines, jails or both.
The details will have to be given even if the address changes
According to the rules, if the address of a immigrant changes, it will have to inform it within 10 days. A fine of up to $ 5,000 can be imposed for not doing so.
Apart from this, children who complete the age of 14 years will have to register with the government and also submit fingerprints within 30 days.
Will H-1B and green card holders also have to register?
No. Those who have a valid visa, such as H-1B work visa or student visa, or green card, are already considered registered in the American system. They do not need to fill the ‘form G-325R’.
However, it will be mandatory for such people to keep proof of their legal status at all times, such as visa document or green card.
Strict warning of administration
Christie Nom, Secretary of the US Homeland Security Department (DHS), said, “All non-citizens aged 18 or older will always have to keep evidence of their legal status. Strict action will be taken against those who violate the law. It will not be relaxed.”
This new rule is a significant legal change for millions of immigrants living in the US. Especially H-1B and green card holders are advised to keep their documents always with them and be prepared to present it in case of any investigation.
