Defense Exports: India’s defense exports have reached new heights. Due to the Self-reliant India initiative, the country’s defense industry is progressing rapidly. According to a report by Financial Express, India’s defense exports are set to reach Rs 236.2 billion in FY 2025, which is 34 times more than in 2014. This year it has seen an increase of 12% as compared to last year. This achievement has been achieved at a time when US President Donald Trump has imposed 50% tariff on India.
Contribution of private companies
Private companies have a big contribution in this success. They exported 64.5% of total exports i.e. Rs 152.3 billion. At the same time, government defense companies (DPSUs) exported Rs 83.9 billion. Exports from government companies recorded a growth of 43.8%, reflecting global demand for Indian defense equipment.
India is a threat to 80 countries
In fiscal year 2025, India exported arms, ammunition and their parts to around 80 countries. These exports include a variety of defense equipment. The government has targeted to reach defense exports to Rs 500 billion by 2029, reflecting the growing potential of India’s defense industry.
top four companies
Details of the four companies making major contributions to these exports are as follows:
1) Astra Microwave Products: This company manufactures radar and space related electronic equipment. Its revenue rose 29% to Rs 2 billion in Q1FY26, while profit increased 126%. The company aims to increase export revenue from 10% to 30% in the next three years. By FY 2028, it wants to achieve a market of Rs 10 billion.
2) Data Patterns: This company is a big name in the field of radar electronics. It sells advanced radar systems and missile seekers to NATO and East Asian countries. Its revenue stood at ₹993 million in Q1FY26, but the company expects growth of 20-25% year-on-year. Its order book stands at ₹8.1 billion.
3) Bharat Dynamics: This government company specializes in missile manufacturing. Its exports will increase eight times to Rs 12.7 billion in fiscal year 2025. This is the main reason why the Akash missile system has been approved for sale to nine countries. The company has an order book of Rs 228 billion.
4) Zen Technologies: This company manufactures anti-drone systems and simulators. In FY2025, 38% of its total revenue came from exports. FY26 started a bit slow, but with export orders worth Rs 1.1 billion, growth is expected in the second half of the fiscal year.

India’s defense industry is now able to compete globally. Indian companies are also planning to expand their presence in new markets such as Africa, the Middle East and NATO countries in the coming years. The government’s target of Rs 500 billion will make India a major hub for defense exports.
