Bhopal, January 03: Today Saturday is going to be a very special day for people interested in astronomy. Actually, today (January 3) both the Moon and the Sun are coming closest to us to celebrate the New Year on Earth. While the Moon will come closer to the Earth and will look almost like a supermoon, the Earth is revolving around the Sun and reaching the point which is closest to the Sun.
Giving information about this astronomical phenomenon, Madhya Pradesh’s National Award winning science broadcaster Sarika Gharu said that all the objects in the sky revolve in an elliptical path, due to which during the entire revolution, once they come to the nearest point and once to the farthest point and they are going to come closer in the beginning of the new year. He told that this situation of coming close is called perihelion.
Sarika told that today at 10.45 pm on Saturday night, the Earth will reach its closest point to the Sun this year and its distance will decrease to 14 crore 70 lakh 99 thousand 894 kilometers, whereas in July this distance will increase to 15 crore 20 lakh 87 thousand 774 kilometers.

He told that on many social media the full moon has been described as Wolf Supermoon. From the point of view of astronomy, the Moon reached its closest point to the Earth on January 1. Now it has started to move away, so it is like a supermoon, not quite a supermoon. Today, when the Moon reaches the full moon stage, it will be located in Gemini at a distance of about three lakh 62 thousand kilometers from the Earth and it will rise in the evening and remain in the sky throughout the night. If you want to see the real biggest and brightest supermoon, you will have to wait for December 24.
Sarika told that in the first week of the new year, where the Moon is coming closer to the Earth and the Earth is also coming to its nearest point to the Sun, then do not forget to celebrate the arrival of New Year 2026 with the Sun and Moon located near the Earth this weekend.
