India has written a new and golden chapter on the global map of clean energy and cutting-edge nuclear technology. Taking a historic step towards energy security, India has successfully launched the world’s first Hydrogen Production Center run on nuclear power. This achievement not only reflects India’s ‘self-reliance’, but also ensures our leading role in building a ‘carbon-free’ world of the future.
A new chapter of history was created in Kalpakkam. The plant was grandly inaugurated at the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR) located at Kalpakkam near Chennai on Friday. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, met IGCAR Director Shrikumar G. Pillai dedicated this state-of-the-art center to the nation. This center will act as a ‘technology demonstrator’ to prove the feasibility of producing hydrogen through nuclear energy.
Big success achieved through indigenous technology The biggest feature of this revolutionary plant is that it has used the ‘Copper-Chlorine Thermochemical Cycle’ indigenously developed by Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Mumbai. According to experts, among all the technologies available for making hydrogen around the world, the copper-chlorine cycle is considered to be the most efficient. Its advantage is its low operating temperature and high thermodynamic efficiency, making it much more effective than conventional methods.
How will the fossil fuel crisis end? Now the question is why is this technology important for India? Actually, nuclear heat emanating from fast reactors is used in this plant. This process is completely carbon-free, which means that our dependence on coal or other fossil fuels for hydrogen production will no longer be there. This technology has the potential to eliminate the huge amounts of greenhouse gases that traditional methods emit. This will not only help in reducing global warming, but will also pave the way for India to become the world’s ‘export hub’ in the field of Hydrogen Economy.
