State/Territory Heatwave alert (for how long)
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi 25 to 28 May
Uttar Pradesh 25 to 28 May
Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Odisha 25 to 29 May
Rajasthan 25 to 30 May
Chhattisgarh and Telangana 25 to 28 May
Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh 26 and 27 May

These 3 big geographical reasons are hidden behind the record breaking heat.

This year the heat in India has destroyed the records of the last several decades. Meteorologists have attributed this extremely long and deadly heat wave to three major geographical and seasonal reasons.

The first reason is that there was a huge lack of western disturbance this year. Generally, in the month of May, the cold western disturbances coming to North India weakened, due to which there was no pre-monsoon rain at all and the earth continued to heat up. The second major reason is the effect of active El Nino in the Pacific Ocean, which increased the global temperature and created record-breaking heat in the Indian subcontinent. The third major reason was that this time the night temperature broke all records; Recently, the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 32.4 degrees Celsius, which has been recorded as the hottest night in the month of May in the last 14 years.
