Hazrat Zainab: The lioness who raised the voice of truth in Yazid’s court after Karbala

News India Live, Digital Desk: Hazrat Zainab: Every year the 10th date of the Islamic month of Muharram (Rose-e-Ashura) reminds us of Karbala’s war and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. This day is celebrated as a symbol of raising voice against renunciation, truth and persecution. But why did this battle of Karbala happen, and what was the character of Hazrat Zainab in this whole incident?

Foundation of war: Trees of truth versus power

This historic battle of Karbala was fought between the Nawase of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Imam Hussain (son of the Prophet’s daughter Fatima and son -in -law Ali) and Yazid Ibn Mu’awiya, the ruler of the Umayyad dynasty. Indeed, Yazid was an autocratic and morally corrupt ruler who wanted to validate his rule. For this, he demanded Imam Hussain to take Bayat (oath of loyalty).

Imam Hussain flatly refused to take his bayat due to Yazid’s unjust and unlike the principles of Islam. He believed that the ruler of Yazid would fracture the teachings of Islam and the ideals of the Prophet. He thought it better to sacrifice his life to protect Islam and truth, instead of bowing to an unknown ruler.

Travel from Medina to Karbala:

When Yazid increased the pressure to bow down to Imam Hussain, Imam Hussain along with his family and some loyal companions left Madina and left for Kufa (Iraq), where people assured him of help. However, Yazid’s armies surrounded him on the way to a place called Karbala and the battle took place on the 10th date (Ashura) of Muharram month of 680 AD (Hijri year 61).

In front of Imam Hussain and his small convoy (about 72 men, children and elderly), Yazid had a huge army (about 30,000). For three days, water was also closed at Imam Hussain’s camp. While fighting with indomitable courage and determination, Imam Hussain and all his loyal companions were martyred on this day.

Hazrat Zainab’s incomparable contribution:

After this tragic incident of Karbala, Imam Hussain’s sister, Hazrat Zainab Bint Ali, survived. After the war, he was taken captive with other members of Imam Hussain’s family (women and children) and taken to Yazid’s court in Kufa and Damascus.

This was the moment when Hazrat Zainab’s extraordinary courage and eloquence was demonstrated. When he was brought to the court of Yazid, where Yazid was celebrating Vijay, Hazrat Zainab gave a tactful speech with extreme fearlessness and respect, despite his tragedy and suffering. He publicly reprimanded Yazid for his cruelty, unjust rule and his derogatory attitude towards Allah. He expressed complete clarity to the results of Karbala’s message, Imam Hussain’s ideals and Yazid’s acts. His words shook Yazid and his courtiers.

Hazrat Zainab not only took care of the people who were captive, but through their strong voice, conveyed the message of the massacre of Karbala to the whole world, ensuring that the motive of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain was not forgotten. His courage and his speech proved that Yazid had martyred only one body, not principles. Even today, his advocacy for the patience and truth of Hazrat Zainab remains an important and inspiring part of the Karbala movement.
