New Delhi: ITR Filing 2025 deadline ends today: The deadline for filing your income tax return (ITR) is ending today i.e. Monday 15 September.
The current deadline (15 September) has already been extended as CBDT has extended the time limit for non-audit cases from 31 July to 15 September 2025.
Although tax bodies and experts have called for action from the Income Tax Department citing continuous problems in the filing system and discrepancies between Form 26 AS and AIS, the Income Tax Department says that the last date for filing ITR is September 15.
Meanwhile, experts and taxpayers are facing technical difficulties on the e-filing platform. This year, tax professionals are also struggling with difficulties due to IT utilities being released late. The continuous problems on the portal and the discrepancies between Form 26AS and annual information details (AIS) are making the situation worse.

The tax department has thanked taxpayers and tax professionals for reaching the target of 6 crore income tax returns (ITR) by 13 September 2025.
The Income Tax Department has tweeted, “Our Helpdesk is working on 24×7 basis and we are providing assistance through calls, live chat, webx sessions and Twitter/X. We urge all those who have not yet filed ITR for the assessment year 2025-26, they should continue to get this pace as soon as possible!”
According to data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the filing of ITR has seen a steady increase over the years, which reflects increasing compliance and expansion of tax base. For the assessment year 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were filed by 31 July 2024, while the number was 6.77 crore in the assessment year 2023-24, which shows an increase of 7.5 percent year-on-year.
