New Delhi/Lucknow. This time has brought great relief for Anganwadi workers and assistants, who are considered the strongest link of health and nutrition in rural and urban areas. The voices of Anganwadi sisters, who have been struggling for a long time demanding increase in their honorarium, permanentization and social security, are now being heard seriously. Many states of the country including Uttar Pradesh have approved the proposals to increase the honorarium of Anganwadi workers, which is a big gift for them amid rising inflation.

Mathematics of salary/honorarium increase: How do you get the money?

The honorarium of Anganwadi workers is given from the common fund of the Central and State Governments.

Center Part: At present, the Central Government gives a fixed honorarium of ₹ 4,500 per month to Anganwadi workers, ₹ 3,500 to Mini Anganwadi workers and ₹ 2,250 per month to helpers.

State’s Share (Incentive Amount): On top of this, state governments add additional incentive amount as per their budget. This is why the total salary of Anganwadi sisters varies in different states. Under the new budget and announcements of 2026, many state governments have significantly increased their share of incentive amount.

Why was this decision necessary?

Anganwadi workers have a heavy burden of responsibilities on their shoulders, which are often underestimated:

Foundations of Nutrition and Health: Weighing children, protecting them from malnutrition, and distributing ‘Take Home Ration’ (THR) to pregnant and lactating women.

Vaccination and Survey: Their duties range from pulse polio to measuring pulse rate and government surveys (like census or BLO duty).

Effect of inflation: Despite increase in working hours and inflation, their honorarium was not increasing proportionately, which was deepening the economic crisis.

Direct and indirect benefits of salary increase

This positive step of the government will not only benefit the Anganwadi workers but the entire society:

economic empowerment: The increased honorarium will directly improve the standard of living of these women. They will be able to better meet the needs of their children’s education and family.

Increase in efficiency: Getting fair remuneration increases self-esteem. When economic stress eases, they will be able to devote more energy to eradicating malnutrition and improving mother-child health.

Changes in society: A strong Anganwadi system simply means healthy children and healthy mothers, which is a sign of a strong nation.

Future expectations: There are many more demands

The wage hike is a great and welcome step, but experts and unions believe it is just a beginning. Expectations are also high that Anganwadi sisters will get the following facilities in future:

Permanent Employee Status: They should be declared as ‘Government Employees’ instead of ‘Honorary Employees’.

social Security: Health insurance facilities like EPF, ESI and benefit of respectable pension and gratuity after retirement.
