Explosion in Naugam police station premises
Nine people were killed and 27 others were injured in the blast at Naugam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar. The blast occurred when officials were taking samples from a large cache of explosives seized in connection with a recent terror module case, officials said on Saturday.
According to officials, the blast occurred late Friday night, killing nine people and injuring 27, mostly policemen and forensic officers. He said that when the blast took place, the policemen were handling explosive material brought from Faridabad, Haryana.
Srinagar Deputy Commissioner interrogated the injured.
Security forces have arrived with sniffer dogs to investigate the explosion that took place at Naugam Police Station premises in Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Akshay Labroo met the injured in the hospital.
Six bodies recovered from the blast site
Officials said samples of a portion of the 360 kg of explosives found in the rented house of arrested Dr Muzammil Ganai are being taken as part of the ongoing investigation. He said that six bodies have been recovered from the blast site and the dead have not been identified yet. The bodies have been taken to the police control room in Srinagar.
24 policemen and three civilians injured
Officials said at least 24 policemen and three civilians are admitted to various hospitals in the city. The massive explosion disturbed the peace of the night and damaged the police station building. The injured policemen were taken to various hospitals in the city. The continuous small explosions hampered the immediate rescue operation by the bomb disposal squad.
First FIR in interstate terrorism module case
Some of the seized explosives have been kept in the police forensic lab, while a major part of the 360 kg explosive was kept in the police station where an FIR was lodged against the terror module. The entire conspiracy was exposed in mid-October after police and security forces found threatening posters on the walls in Banpora, Nowgam. Considering the incident a serious threat, Srinagar Police registered a case on 19 October and formed a dedicated team.
Meticulous, frame-by-frame analysis of the CCTV footage helped investigators identify the first three suspects arrested – Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf and Maqsood Ahmed Dar alias Shahid. A case of stone pelting was registered against all three and they were seen pasting posters.
Arrest of Maulvi Irfan Ahmed
After questioning, Maulvi Irfan Ahmed, a former paramedic from Shopian who has now become an imam (preacher), was arrested. He was the one who provided the posters and is believed to have used his easy access to the medical community to radicalize doctors.
Eventually, Srinagar Police reached Al Falah University in Faridabad, where they arrested Dr. Muzammil Ahmed Ganai and Dr. Shaheen Saeed. A large cache of chemicals including ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and sulfur was seized from there.
A trio of doctors were running the entire module
Investigators believe the entire module was being run by a core trio of doctors: Muzammil Ganai (arrested), Umar Nabi (the driver of the explosives-laden car that exploded near the Red Fort on November 10) and Muzaffar Rather (fugitive). The eighth person arrested, Dr Adil Rather, is the brother of absconding Dr Muzaffar Rather, from whom an AK-56 rifle was seized. The investigation into his role is still ongoing.
