News India Live, Digital Desk: Once again there has been a big earthquake in Nepal’s politics. Sudan Gurung, who emerged as the hero of anti-corruption image and ‘Gen Z’ protests, has resigned from the post of Home Minister of Nepal on Wednesday (22 April 2026). He has taken this decision within a month of his appointment, which has created problems for the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

Left the post citing moral reasons

Announcing his resignation through his Facebook post, Sudan Gurung wrote that he is leaving the post to allow a fair investigation into the allegations against him. He said, “For me, morals are more important than position and there is no greater power than public trust.” He clarified that he does not want there to be any ‘conflict of interest’ in the investigation process while he is in office.

What are the serious allegations?

Home Minister Gurung’s troubles began when questions were raised over his asset disclosures and some questionable investments.

Connection to Deepak Bhatt: News of his business ties with businessman Deepak Bhatt, accused of money laundering, was highlighted in the media.

Investing in Stock Market: A controversy arose over his stake in Star Micro Insurance Company Limited. It is alleged that the sources of investment in this company were not transparent.

NGO ‘Hami Nepal’: There was also a demand for investigation into the sources of funds received by his voluntary organization.

Got recognition from anti-corruption forum

Sudan Gurung, 38, was a prominent face of the anti-corruption youth protests that took place in September last year. After joining the Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP), he won the election and took over as Home Minister on 27 March 2026. As soon as he assumed office, he met former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma had taken bold actions like the arrest of Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhat, which were much discussed.

Big challenge for Balendra Shah government

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has accepted the resignation of Sudan Gurung. At present, the Prime Minister himself will take charge of the Home Ministry. Opposition parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have called this resignation a moral defeat of the government. Experts believe that this resignation will prove to be a big litmus test for the new government’s promises of transparency and accountability.
