Mumbai – The Supreme Court has rejected the petition opposing the Maharashtra Municipal Council’s board of writing in Urdu, which has led to a decision respected for linguistic diversity in the country. The Hindi language itself comes from the word Persian from Hindavi. Urdu also has words borrowed from many Indian languages including Sanskrit.
Interestingly, Urdu language has more influence in both criminals and civil court proceedings. Words such as court, affidavit and tissue are commonly used. According to the Constitution, the official language of the Supreme Court and the High Court is English, yet many Urdu words are still used in the courts, such as Vakalatanama, Dasti etc.
Language is not religion. Language does not represent religion. The language is associated with community, region and people, not religion. Language is culture. Language is a measure of measuring the social progress of a community and its people.
Citing a quotation of Maulud Banjedi in the judgment, Judge Dhulia said that when you learn a language, you do not just learn to speak and write, you learn to be open -minded, independent, tolerant, generous and inclusive towards all humans. A former member of the Patur Municipal Council of Akola filed a petition raising the issue.
