Stay, food and education are all absolutely free, yet huge amount of money comes into the bank account of cadets every month.

National Defense Academy (NDA) is the biggest and prestigious opportunity for the youth who dream of serving the country by becoming officers in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force. As much as it is a matter of pride to pass the NDA exam, its training life is also equally excellent and disciplined. Often people know that in NDA, world class training, accommodation, food, medical and education are given to the cadets by the government absolutely free of cost. But very few people know that despite all these free facilities, a fixed salary or stipend is sent by the government to the bank account of the cadets every month during the training.

How much amount do cadets get every month during training? After successfully completing the rigorous three-year training at NDA, cadets are sent to the respective academies (IMA, INA or AFA) for further training as per their chosen wing (Army, Navy or Air Force). When cadets are in their last year of service training or pre-commissioning training, they are given a fixed stipend by the government. According to the rules of the Defense Ministry, during this period, cadets get a stipend of Rs 56,100 (equivalent to the starting pay of Level 10) every month, which is a very good amount for any youth to start their career.

All accommodation and food are free, so where do the cadets spend this money? In NDA and other military academies, all the facilities like excellent hostels, nutritious and balanced food (mess), uniforms, books and sports facilities are completely free for the cadets to stay. In such a situation, this stipend received by the cadets keeps getting deposited in their bank accounts. Some part of this amount is used for their personal expenses like extra kits of their choice, some canteen items or travel to and from home during holidays. The remaining amount is kept safe in their bank account, due to which they get a good bank balance as soon as the training is over.

Salary and allowances increase after commission As soon as cadets complete their entire training and are commissioned into the Indian Armed Forces at the rank of ‘Lieutenant’ or its equivalent, their fortunes completely change. As soon as the commission is received, their regular salary starts, which starts with the basic pay of Rs 56,100. Apart from this, they start getting dozens of government facilities and allowances like Dearness Allowance (DA), Kit Maintenance Allowance, High Altitude Allowance (if posting is in remote areas), Transport Allowance and free medical. Overall, the initial in-hand salary of a military officer is very attractive and brings the highest respect in the society.
