Kharagpur, 05 December: Senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Dilip Ghosh, who is known as the doyen of Bengal politics, is once again seen becoming active in his traditional constituency Paschim Medinipur. His continuous public relations campaign from Medinipur to Kharagpur and his activism after his recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah have made it clear that ‘Dada’ is no longer in a mood to remain isolated. Dilip Ghosh’s open claim regarding Kharagpur has increased the political temperature within the party.
Recently, in a conversation with the media, Dilip Ghosh had said in clear words,
“What was the need for me to contest from Bardhaman? The people of Kharagpur have made me win twice, have explained everything to me. If the party asks, I will contest from Kharagpur only.”
After this statement, the turmoil within BJP has intensified. This question is gaining momentum in political circles whether BJP is once again going to bet on Dilip Ghosh in Kharagpur in the 2026 assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the statement of Kharagpur BJP MLA Hiran Chatterjee came out on Sunday evening, which is being seen as a direct response to the increasing activism of Dilip Ghosh. Without taking Dilip’s name, Hiran Chatterjee said,
“The decision to give tickets in BJP is taken by the Central Election Committee. That committee consists of leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and party president J.P. Nadda. They decide who will contest from where.”
he adds,
“In 2021, the same committee made me a candidate from Kharagpur Sadar, in 2022 from Kharagpur Municipality and in 2024 from Ghatal Lok Sabha seat. If in 2026 the same committee makes me a candidate from Kharagpur again, then I would like Dilip Babu to campaign for BJP and me like today.”
Not only this, Hiran Chatterjee also added in a harsh tone,
“Dilip Babu has said that it was injustice to send him to another seat despite being a sitting MP. Then put the same question in front of him – I am also a sitting MLA here.”
Political analysts are considering this statement as a sign of increasing restlessness and possible internal strife within the party.
Experts say that Dilip Ghosh’s current activism is not limited to just claiming the ticket, but is part of his strategy to re-establish his political dominance and support base within the party. It is noteworthy that in 2016, when BJP was not considered a major factor in West Bengal politics, Dilip Ghosh had given a strong identity to the party by winning the Kharagpur Sadar seat. After this, in 2019, he created a major political upset by defeating veteran Trinamool Congress leader Manas Bhuyan from Medinipur Lok Sabha seat.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Dilip Ghosh launched a massive public relations campaign in various areas of West Medinipur district. Since morning, he was seen directly communicating with party workers and common people at different places. After a day’s political engagement, he reached his bungalow in Kharagpur at around 9 pm, where he held an important organizational meeting with BJP workers keeping Saraswati Puja at the centre. The upcoming political strategy and strengthening of the organization were discussed in the meeting.
After this, Dilip Ghosh late at around 9.30 pm. Prem Chandra attended the death feast of Jhaji, where he made his energetic and impressive presence. Through continuous public relations, organizational meetings and active participation in social programs, Dilip Ghosh has clearly indicated that he has not only returned to the political arena, but is also fully prepared to make his role decisive again in the politics of Kharagpur and West Medinipur.
