“Tata’s ‘Baby Defender’: Sierra SUV ready to knock in the Indian market

New Delhi: Tata Motors is also preparing to launch its new compact SUV, also known as ‘Baby Defender’ in the Indian market. The much awaited SUV is named Tata Sierra, which offers a unique mix of off-road capacity and futuristic technology. This car incorporates design elements inspired by Land Rover Defender in its body, which gives it a strong and premium look.

Design and features:

Tata Sierra’s design is boxy and rugged, including many features inspired by the Land Rover Defender, such as floating roofline, flesh doer handle and large body cladding. Even inside the car, it is expected that there will be a sleek dashboard, which can be given many digital screens (infotainment, instrument clusters and a dedicated screen for passenger). Other premium features may include panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, head-up display (HUD), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an advanced JBL sound system. In terms of security, it can be equipped with features like dual-front airbags, EBD, 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). In addition, it is also expected to get dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setup and terrain response system, which will increase its off-road capacity.

Engine and Paurtrain:

According to reports, Tata Sierra will come up with several powertrain options:

  • Electric (EV): It is expected that it will give a range of 310 miles (about 500 km), with dual-motor AWD and single-motor RWD options available.

  • petrol: The 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine (approximately 168 hp) will be available, which can be connected to 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic or 7-speed DCT gearbox. A new 1.2-liter direct-injection turbo-petrol engine (about 125 hp) can also be introduced.

  • Diesel: A 2.0-liter diesel engine (about 118 hp) can also be introduced in some markets.

Price and launch:

Although the declaration of the exact launch date is yet to be announced, Tata Sierra is believed to be launched around this year’s festive season (Diwali). Its estimated price can start from about Rs 10 lakh and can go up to Rs 19.52 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top model. This car will compete with models like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and Honda Elevate in India.
