New Delhi/Lucknow. After a long period of prayer, patience, fasting and prayers, the moon of Shawwal has finally appeared in the sky of the country. As soon as the crescent moon made its appearance on Friday evening, there was a wave of happiness in Muslim communities across the country. It has been officially announced from all the major centers including Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Lucknow’s Eidgah and Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid that the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm all over India on Saturday, March 21, 2026.
30 days of complete worship yielded results
This year, the month of Ramadan lasted for 30 days, which is considered very blessed in Islam. Due to the moon not being visible on Thursday, the last and 30th fast of Ramadan was observed on Friday. According to the Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar), the new month ‘Shawwal’ starts from the next day of sighting of the moon and Eid is celebrated on this day. After following the strict rules of Sehri and Iftar for 30 days, the devotees are now thanking Allah.
Big Ulemas confirmed: Celebration from Delhi to Hyderabad
As soon as the sighting of the moon was confirmed, Eid announcements started coming from major religious centers of the country:
Delhi: Jama Masjid’s Naib Shahi Imam Syed Shabban Bukhari declared Eid on March 21 while observing the moon.
Lucknow: Islamic Center of India Chairman Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali announced that Eid prayers will be offered across the state on Saturday.
Hyderabad: Deccan Muslim Ulema Council also confirmed the sighting of the moon late in the evening.
Why is it called ‘Meethi Eid’?
Eid-ul-Fitr in common parlance ‘Meethi Eid’ Is also called. On this day, ‘Sheer Khurma’ made of milk, dry fruits and vermicelli is specially prepared in homes. Apart from this, the guests’ mouths are made sweet with dishes like Kimami Sevaiyan and Phirni. This festival gives the message of forgetting bitterness and adding sweetness to relationships.
Celebration of markets and preparation for Namaz
On the occasion of Chand Raat, tremendous activity was seen in the markets till late Friday night. From Chandni Chowk in Delhi to Aminabad in Lucknow, people were seen shopping for clothes, perfumes and seviyan. Special Eid prayers (Salat al-Eid) will be offered in Eidgahs across the country on Saturday morning. After the Namaz, the tradition of giving ‘Zakat’ and ‘Fitra’ (charity) will be followed, so that the poor section of the society can also join in the happiness.
