Sensation in Vijayapura, Karnataka: 32 kg silver idol stolen from Shri Pavada Basaveshwara Temple, goods worth Rs 1.20 crores stolen.


Criminals have targeted a center of faith in Vijayapura district of Karnataka. This theft in the famous Sri Pavada Basaveshwara temple located in Basarcode village of Muddebihal taluk has created a sensation in the entire area. Unknown thieves broke the locks of the temple on the intervening night of July 5 and 6 and made away with the precious silver idol weighing 32 kg. The estimated value of this idol has been estimated at Rs 51.20 lakh, while the total loss including other stolen items is expected to reach Rs 1.20 crore.

The priest came to know about the incident in the morning

The theft came to light when the temple priest arrived at around four o’clock the next morning for routine worship. He saw that the doors of the temple were open and the locks were broken. On reaching inside the sanctum sanctorum, they found the idol missing, after which they immediately informed the temple committee. Temple committee president Karanandappa Biradar has lodged an official complaint in this regard at Muddebihal police station. After this incident, there is deep anger among the local devotees and they are demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

Police engaged in investigation

As soon as information about the incident was received, the police team reached the spot and started collecting evidence. The police are currently scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed around the temple so that the suspects can be identified. The help of forensic team and dog squad is also being taken so that clues about the thieves can be found. In the investigation so far, it is clear that the thieves had accurate information about the security arrangements of the temple and the idol. The police have also issued an alert in the nearby villages and have registered a case against unknown thieves at Muddebihal police station and started further investigation.
