Varanasi, 23 October (Hindustan Reporter). There is increasing anger among sailors regarding running of luxury Bengal cruise after Ganga Vilas in river Ganga. A delegation of sailor community under the banner of Maa Ganga Nishadraj Seva Trust on Wednesday went to the office of Additional Police Commissioner Law and Order S Chanappa and submitted a memorandum of their demands to him.
Shambhu Sahni and Rakesh Sahni, who were part of the delegation, said that the sailor community has been supporting their families for centuries by sailing boats in the Ganga. Now in recent times, some capitalists are disrupting our livelihood and disrupting our social system by running luxury cruises in the Ganga. A few years ago, when Alaknanda Cruise was run in Ganga for the first time, the sailor community had organized a big movement against it. When the sailor community showed solidarity by stopping the boat operation for 10 days, it was said that the cruise should be shifted from Assighat to the opposite ghat. The cruise operators had asked for six months' time until proper arrangements were made. So we had given approval to tie Alaknanda at Ravidasghat. After this, Alaknanda was not even removed and many other cruises started running in Ganga. We remained silent following the orders of the government.
Sailor Shambhu told that two cruises Vivekananda and Manikshah were brought to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Corridor to carry goods. Later both these cruises were connected to the Roroferry service. It was said to run from Chunar to Markandeya Mahadev Dham. But both these cruises are running in Banaras only. Meanwhile, a mini cruise started running at Adikeshav Ghat. The people of the sailor community were opposing this when Bengal Cruise came to sail in the Ganga. It has been erected at Namo Ghat. That place is already there for boat mooring for the sailor society. When protested, Bengal Cruise officials say that we have permission here. In such a situation, our demand is that Bengal Cruise should be stopped from plying in Ganga and it should be removed.
