Registration of live-in relationship was made mandatory after the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) was implemented in Uttarakhand. Now a similar step can be taken in Rajasthan. The Rajasthan High Court has ordered the government to take necessary steps to register the live-in relationship.
High court directed to make a portal
The bench of Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand, while hearing several petitions of live-in couples, has asked the government to start a portal for relationships where registration can be done. The court also said that till no law is made on it, there should be a system to register these relationships in front of any authority or tribunal.
Safety steps
The bench said in its order,
“Many couples are in live-in relationship, but their relationships are not accepted, which threatens them from family and society. For this reason, they are turning to the court and demanding the security of their life and freedom. ”
The court also said that the condition of women living in live-in relationship is not legally similar to the wife, which makes them feel lack of social acceptance and security.
Instructions to create committee and web portal
The High Court asked the state government to form a special committee in every district, which will solve the complaints and problems of live-in couples. Apart from this, it was also directed to start a website or web portal, which could provide safety and legal assistance to such couples.
The court has ordered the government to submit a report in this regard by or before 1 March 2025.
Now waiting for the decision of Rajasthan government
After this order of the High Court, now the Rajasthan government has to decide whether it will implement or challenge this decision. If the government accepts this decision, then rules will be made for registration of live-in relationship and couples will have to register it with their consent.
It is worth noting that earlier the registration of live-in relationship under UCC in Uttarakhand has been made mandatory, where parents permission has also been kept necessary. Now it has to be seen what the government takes on this decision in Rajasthan.
