The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has taken the biggest action so far in the digital banking sector of the country. The banking license of Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) has been officially canceled with effect from April 24, 2026. After this strict decision, Paytm Payments Bank is now completely out of its banking services. If you are also a Paytm customer, then this news is very important for you. Let us understand in detail how this decision will affect you.
Constant ignoring of rules proved costly
RBI has taken this big and strict step under the rules of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. The investigating agencies and the central bank found that Paytm Payments Bank was continuously violating the rules. Despite repeated warnings, serious lapses were seen in the bank’s functioning and KYC procedures. RBI has clearly said that the management of the bank has proved to be a complete failure in protecting the interests of its customers and depositors.
What will be the impact on common customers and their money?
After this big decision, the biggest question in the minds of customers is about the security of their money. According to the new rules, the situation will be like this:
Complete stop on transactions: The bank will no longer accept any new deposits from any of its customers. Along with this, any type of credit transaction has also been completely banned in the bank.
Your money is absolutely safe: The biggest relief news for the customers is that RBI has completely reassured the depositors. The bank has sufficient funds to return the money of all the customers. You can withdraw or spend the old balance in your account without any hassle.
FASTag and Wallet Service: If you use FASTag or wallet issued by Paytm Payments Bank, you will no longer be able to add new money to it (i.e. top-up).
Will Paytm App not work now?
If you are wondering how to make payment through Paytm, then there is no need to panic. This action of RBI has been taken only on ‘Payments Bank’. Your main Paytm app will continue to work smoothly as before as a third-party app (TPAP). Due to partnership with other associate banks like State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC and Axis Bank, there will be no negative impact on UPI services of customers and you will be able to make payments as before.
What steps will RBI take next?
The next step of the Reserve Bank of India in this whole matter is to legally close this bank completely. For this, RBI will soon approach the High Court, where a formal appeal will be made to appoint a liquidator to complete the process of winding up of the bank.
