Senior leader and general secretary of Congress Jairam Ramesh has announced that the opposition parties (INDIA alliance) yesterday i.e. 17 April 2026 occurring on Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman election It has been decided to completely boycott it.

Vacancy of the post of Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha: The opposition argues that the Modi government has not appointed a Deputy Speaker in the Lok Sabha for the last 7 years, which has never happened before in parliamentary history.
Objection to the member nominated by the President: NDA has Harivansh Narayan Singh (JDU) has been made the candidate for this post for the third time. According to Jairam Ramesh, Harivansh’s second term ended on April 9, a day after he was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member by the President. The opposition says that for the first time in parliamentary history, a member nominated by the President is being considered for the post of Deputy Speaker.
Lack of consultation: The opposition alleged that the government did not hold any meaningful consultation with the opposition parties regarding the election and selection of the candidate for this important post.
Harivansh Narayan Singh: Claiming for the third time
Harivansh Narayan Singh, 69, who is originally from Ranchi in Jharkhand and has been a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar, was also elected Deputy Chairman in 2018 and 2020. This time NDA is preparing to make him sit on this chair again. However, the opposition has clarified that this boycott is not due to any personal disrespect towards them, but in protest against the working style of the government.
