The heavy rains in the national capital Delhi and adjacent areas of Delhi-NCR (Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad) on Monday have brought great relief to the people from the sultry heat that has been troubling them for a long time. During the rain, dark clouds gathered in Jantar Mantar, Dutva Path and surrounding areas of Delhi. While on one hand the temperature dropped due to rain and the weather became pleasant, on the other hand passengers had to face heavy traffic jams due to water logging on major routes and slowing down of vehicles.
IMD’s ‘Yellow Alert’ for Delhi-NCR
Releasing the district-wise forecast on Monday evening, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that light to moderate rain, lightning and strong winds at a speed of 30 to 40 km/hour were recorded in many areas including South-East, Shahdara, Central, North-East, New Delhi, West and North-West Delhi. The Meteorological Department has warned that monsoon activities will increase further on Tuesday and Wednesday, due to which ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued across Delhi.
IMD has also predicted light to moderate rain for Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad. However, meteorologists say that this rain may be mainly localized, that is, there will be heavy showers at some places while nearby areas may remain dry.
Safdarjung temperature and air humidity 98%
According to IMD, the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 26.6 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, while the relative humidity level had reached 98 percent. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung Base Weather Station was estimated to be around 36 degrees Celsius. In the morning, winds were blowing from north-eastern direction at a speed of 9 km/hour.
14% rain deficiency in Delhi from June 1 till now
Despite the recent rains, the total quota of monsoon in Delhi is still incomplete. According to the data of the Meteorological Department, between June 1 and July 25, only 247.8 mm rainfall has been recorded in Delhi, whereas normally this figure should have been 365.3 mm. Thus, there is still 14 percent rainfall deficiency in Delhi, although IMD is considering it in the normal category.
Warning of heavy rain and lightning in Uttar Pradesh till July 30
Apart from Delhi-NCR, the pace of monsoon is going to increase in entire Uttar Pradesh also. According to the Lucknow-based Zonal Meteorological Centre, there will be widespread rain in most parts of eastern and western UP on Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted in some districts. The Meteorological Department has warned that there will be a serious danger of thunder and lightning at different places in the state till July 30.
