Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been engulfed in controversies over his recent statement, where he has made comments like “One Nation, One Husband”. His statement came in the context of ‘Operation Sindoor’, which is a program of Punjab Police to help women who are released after marriage to foreign nationals (NRI). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the Chief Minister, terming this statement as ’embarrassing’.
The matter arose when Bhagwant Maan was speaking on the issue of Indian brides released by foreigners. He said that after marrying abroad, incidents of many men abandoning their wives have become common, due to which women are legally and socially hanging in the balance. ‘Operation Sindoor’ is designed to provide justice to such women and protect their rights. However, during this time the Chief Minister made a disputed remarks that “If a person is already married, he should not be allowed to marry again, because a person in a country can have only one spouse. If someone is already married, he is not eligible to get married.”
BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala has described this statement of Chief Minister Mann as “the most embarrassing”. Poonawala posted on X (first Twitter), saying, “Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann was caught making embarrassing comments like a country-a husband! Such ignorance, anti-women and unconstitutional talk… If a person is divorced, he is free to get a second marriage!” Poonawala argued that Mann’s statement is against India’s secular law, which allows a re -marriage after a legitimate divorce. He raised the question whether the Chief Minister was ignorant or was deliberately misunderstood.
Not only the BJP, but also various women’s rights and legal experts have objected to this statement. He says that such comments weaken women empowerment efforts and violate legal rights. The controversy has also diverted attention for the basic purpose of ‘Operation Sindoor’, which is actually an attempt to deal with fraud marriage and abandonment of women.
