PM Modi is going on an official tour of four important countries of Europe, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands and Italy next month. According to sources, this visit is the first major diplomatic step after the historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU). The main focus of this visit will be the ‘India-Nordic Summit’ to be held in Norway, where a major strategy will be prepared on issues like security, energy and trade.
‘India-Nordic Summit’ in Norway: Emphasis on strategic partnership
The first stop of the Prime Minister’s visit is expected to be Norway’s capital Oslo. Here PM Modi will participate in the third ‘India-Nordic Summit’. The heads of state of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland will attend this conference. It is noteworthy that the ‘Mother of All Deals’ i.e. FTA has been concluded between India and EU in January 2026, after which new avenues of technology and investment are going to open with the Nordic countries.
Italy and Netherlands: business relations will reach new heights
After Norway, PM Modi will visit Sweden and Netherlands. The Netherlands is a major trading partner of India, where discussions are likely to take place on agriculture and water management technologies. After this, the last and most important stop of the journey will be Italy. PM Modi will reach Rome on the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. Special focus will be given to advancing the ‘India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor’ (IMEEC) between India and Italy and strengthening defense cooperation.
Why is this tour special?
This visit is taking place at a time when the world is grappling with geopolitical instability and energy crisis. Under the India-EU trade deal, more than 99% of India’s exports have got duty-free access to European markets. This visit of PM Modi will prove to be a milestone in implementing this agreement at the ground level and ensuring a larger market in Europe for Indian ‘Make in India’ products. Besides, many agreements are also expected on green energy and digital infrastructure.
Preparations for trip to G-7 and France also
According to reports, after this May visit, Prime Minister Modi may also visit Evian-les-Bains, France in June 2026, where he will attend the G-7 summit organized by President Emmanuel Macron as an ‘outreach’ guest. It is clear from these back-to-back visits to Europe that India is now seeing Europe as an essential partner in the global supply chain and diplomacy.
