4 darjeeling landslides: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths due to heavy rains and landslides in Darjeeling in West Bengal on Sunday (5 September). He assured that the central government is committed to provide all possible assistance to the affected people. At least 14 people have died in a landslide caused by torrential rains in the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal. Many houses have been washed away in landslides and roads have been damaged, causing contact with many remote villages.
PM Modi wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday, “The loss of life and property caused by the collapse of a bridge in Darjeeling. He further wrote, “After heavy rains and landslides, the situation is being closely monitored in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas. We are committed to provide assistance to the affected people as soon as possible.”
Earlier, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and BJP MLA Shubhendu Adhikari had urged the Bengal government to speed up rescue operations and provide relief to the affected people as soon as possible. He said on the social media platform x that the hilly areas of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kursong have been badly affected due to continuous heavy rains in North Bengal. Communication and transportation from the plains of Siliguri, Terai and Duars due to landslides and floods have almost been completely completely interrupted.
The iron bridge over the Balasan river in Dudhia connecting Siliguri and Mirik has collapsed. Shubhendu Adhikari said that thousands of residents are trapped without necessary supply and services and are facing difficulties. He wrote in the post, “I request the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to raise resources immediately and make adequate arrangements to restore the communication network in these areas. Also, to help the troubled people and prevent this crisis from further deteriorating, the distribution of relief materials including food, water, medicines and temporary shelters should be preferred. The safety and welfare of our fellow civilians should be provided in North Bengal.
BJP MP from Darjeeling Raju Bista said, “I have been deeply saddened to know about heavy rains in many parts of the state. He has reported deaths, property loss and damage to the infrastructure.” The BJP MP said that he is assessing the situation. He is in touch with the authorities concerned. He also appealed to BJP workers to help people affected.
Castes have been reported from many places including Sarsali, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar village (Mechi) and Mirik Lake area. Landslides disrupted traffic on major roads including Mirik-Sukhiapokhari road, while communication lines with several hill settlements were broken.
